LABS
OVERVIEW
The Philippine Media Studies Lab (PMSL) of the Department of Broadcast Communication (DBC) is
a physical and intellectual space that informs and advances collaborative work in line with
the Department’s goals in research, creative work, teaching, and public service. The PMSL is
envisioned as a hub of excellent, responsive, relevant, and future-oriented research and
creative work, collaborative engagement, and extension service channel. Envisioned as a formal
part of the Department’s academic program structure, the lab and its subgroups accommodate
capstone courses, graduate students, interns, and other participants in projects that each
subgroup leads.
The PMSL functions as a hub for the following: (1) Research Development, (2) Publication Programs,
(3) Creative Production, (4) Public Service and Community Engagement, and (5) Capacity Building
and Skills Training. Two subgroups comprise the PMSL: The Media Futures Group and The Media Cultures
Group, each further subdivided into specific interest strands.
The PMSL aims to produce written scholarly research materials, think pieces, documentation, and
audio/visual productions. Outputs may likewise take on experimental forms, especially in the production
of audio/visual material (digital and electronic), demonstrations of uses of artificial intelligence,
augmented and virtual reality, and social media virality. Outputs are workshopped and improved
with a view to presenting these at colloquia, seminars, fora, teaching demonstrations, and publication
in academic journals and audio/visual festivals, and to help audiences and various publics approach
social challenges and make changes in the ways we think, create, and live in media.
The Philippine Media Studies Lab seeks to position the Department of Broadcast Communication and
the University of the Philippines Diliman as a leading center for media research, interdisciplinary
collaboration, and public service in the Asia Pacific region.
